Easter Saturday Reflections

I watched BBC's "The Passion' on IPlayer yesterday to connect again with the build up to Christ's death on Good Friday. However I'm never sure how to engage with the Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

This morning I came across this quote from an ancient homily that proved a helpful launchpad into the following readings.  Isaiah 54:5-14; Psalm 30:1-4; Job 14:1-14; Psalm 18:4-6; Ezekiel 37:1,11-14; Psalm 143:7-10; John 2:18-22; Psalm 30:8-12.

Here’s the quote
Something strange is happening - there is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness.  The whole earth keep silence because the king is asleep.  The earth trembles and is still because God has fallen asleep in the flesh and he has raised up all who have slept ever since the world began.  God has died in the flesh and hell trembles with fear…

John 2:18-22
18 Then the Jews demanded of him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?” 19 Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.” 20 The Jews replied, “It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

I hope you find it helpful.

Hi Matt - interesting post.

Genesis tells us that God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, and God commands the people of Israel to work six days and keep the seventh day holy (Shabbat/Saturday).

The only day in which Jesus was fully ‘resting’ in the tomb was, again the Saturday. God intended Shabbat to be a day of rest. The letter to the Hebrews tells us that we have now entered into our spiritual rest through our life in Jesus.
